How Spurr was born…
Helping businesses is in my blood.
As a child, I watched my father help thousands of people turn their business dreams into reality while working as a district director for the Small Business Administration and later as CEO of private commercial business lender. I would sit at his feet and listen to the business success stories of all the various businesses that he helped. I was also inspired by his stories about growing up on a farm, pulling himself up by his bootstraps, joining the army, working his way through college to work for the federal government. Then I watched him take a business in bankruptcy and grow it into a multimillion-dollar company that continues to help fund the dreams of small business owners today! For his dedication and service to local businesses, Dad received The Order of The Palmetto, the most prestigious award given to an individual in the state of South Carolina. This passion for helping businesses has been passed down to me. I often reflect on the times He and I spent together talking business. Dad helped my brother and I to start our own businesses. I was only 19 years old at the time. His keen business mind and unique perception of how things worked seemed to always come through to overcome and solve obstacles we would encounter. We used to have business talks we lovingly called “Feller Talks” because that’s often how Dad would start them off… “Hey Fellas!…” We would sit down in a quiet place and just brainstorm together. Dad taught us the skills of how to work with people and how to inspire people. He had a genuine way of listening to people, an uncanny ability to draw out the root of things. He had a deep reservoir of wisdom to advise people how to better handle “the bumps in the road” in their business journeys. With his guidance and advice, I gained my own experiences and skillsets over the next 20 years managing and operating multiple businesses. My businesses stood firm through tough economic times. My business not only survived but thrived where larger competitors failed and closed their doors. The business grew to several locations and broadened its product and service mix until eventually I sold them. Afterwards I extended my knowledge by learning the Insurance industry in personal, life, health, annuities, mutual funds, and commercial property and casualty lines in all manner of businesses, ranging from retail, to trucking, to forestry industries, and many others. During that time, I further developed my own art of listening to people, discovering their needs, creating proposals, and make presentations. Later, I acquired knowledge of current technologies in sales and marketing strategies, SEO, and web design while working with a dynamic SEO and custom web design company. I am extremely fortunate to be married to a beautiful and talented woman for the past 21 years and together we have 3 wonderful children. My wife grew up as a world traveler living in several different countries learning to speak multiple languages. Her world view, her experiences in the military, and her hunger for knowledge has allowed her to develop an extensive background in clientele management, sales & marketing, non-profits, grant writing, and social media management. She has a unique ability to empathize and understand people. Together we make formidable team!
So, what’s all this mean?
